Welcome to Music!
Hello - my name is Kathy Hopf. This is my 11th year teaching in the Mankato School District. This year I am sharing music with students at Monroe and Bridges.
The Mankato District is in the fifth year of using the GamePlan Series in our music curriculum. GamePlan parallels the school year from September through May, including one fifty minute lesson per week. It sequences musical skills and objectives that support the National Standards for Arts Education. GamePlan is quite diverse and embraces several philosophies including the principles of Orff Schulwerk and the Kodaly approach to reading rhythm and melody. Fourth and Fifth Graders will be working with recorders, tone chimes, and World Drumming equipment, which will allow them to incorporate singing, listening, and instrumentation simultaneously!
I would like to share what this year's Monroe music performances look like, especially because it is different from previous years.
Grades 1, 3, and 5 will have a combined winter performance in the Monroe gym on December 20, 2016. There will performances at 9:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
Grades K, 2, and 4 will be giving "informances" in the spring the week of April 3-7, 2017. The informances will take place during regular music class times. Exact dates and times of the informances will be sent home after the holiday break.
Think of an informance as a "mini performance". It will showcase what music concepts and skills we work on throughout the school year.
This new model gives students the opportunity to model and inform parents about what takes place in the music classroom and to be a part of a large group performance every other year!
I look forward to working with your student(s) this year in music class! Please contact me if you have questions concerning class, curriculum, or the performance schedule for the year.
